NC high school juniors will take college exam

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s public schools chief says the state is ready to require a college entrance exam for high school juniors in March to determine whether students are learning curricula and are prepared for college.

Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson says her department has cobbled together funds to offer ACT tests to the roughly 100,000 11th graders. Atkinson told a legislative committee Tuesday the first test will serve as a baseline for future classes.

Atkinson says the new effort includes 10th graders taking an ACT pretest and seniors following a vocational or technical path to be assessed on skills. The News & Observer of Raleigh first reported Atkinson’s comments.

The $5.5 million needed for the effort will come from unused funds or money saved if a writing test is eliminated.

Official: Obama to embark on bus tour of NC, VA

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

By ERICA WERNER
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House official says President Barack Obama is planning a bus tour through the politically importantstates of North Carolina and Virginia later this month to push for his jobs plan.

The trip is scheduled for Oct. 17-19, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.

The trip will be similar to a three-day bus tour through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois the president went on in August.

Obama is intent on keeping up the pressure on Congress over his jobs proposal, a message the White House believes can resonate with the public, and he often picks states that could be important for his 2012 re-election chances. North Carolina and Virginia are both traditionally Republican states that Obama won in 2008.
