Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — An 18-year-old high school student is scheduled to appear in a North Carolina courtroom in connection with the shooting of a 15-year-old fellow student who was wounded in the neck.

The 18-year-old will appear in court in Cumberland County on Tuesday after he and a 15-year-old suspect were apprehended in the shooting of Catilyn Abercrombie, who was standing in a breezeway outside the cafeteria at Cape Fear High School on Monday when she was shot. Abercrombie underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.

Classes are scheduled to operate as usual at the high school and at a nearby middle school. Cumberland County Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler said there will be additional deputies on hand to help students and parents feel confident about their safety.

NC appeals courts considers sweepstakes machines

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina law enforcement and business owners are seeking clarity on whether all video sweepstakes machines are illegal, or if a law trying to end their existence tramples on free speech rights.

The state Court of Appeals scheduled oral arguments Tuesday on two lawsuits after trial court judges gave different answers last year.

The 2010 law attempted to quash gambling parlors that remained open after a 2007 ban on traditional video poker machines and another law in 2008. Sweepstakes outlet operators say letting customers click on computer screens to uncover potential cash and prizes is a marketing gimmick to buy Internet or phone time, not gambling.

One judge upheld the entire law to ban the machines. Another judge struck down part of the law, allowing certain machines to remain online.
