WHQR gives voters chance to meet and hear from candidates

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Voters in Wilmington had another chance to hear from their candidates for city council and mayor Monday night.

WHQR 91.3 FM held a candidates forum that let a live audience and a panel of journalist ask questions. Many of the questions revolved around jobs but voters WWAY spoke to were most interested in hearing and meeting each candidate in person.

“It’s hard to tell just from the paper what they are like,” said voter Ruth Brown. “When you see them in person and listen to them you get a better grasp of what the issue is and how they would approach it.”

Seven out of nine candidates for city council were in attendance along with both mayoral candidates. The issues discussed varied from public safety, zoning and regulations, to infrastructure; topics that have fired up many voters.

“I think people are angry and confused, ” said voter Richard Mandel.”

Mandel says well some people may be passionate about particular issues and candidates; he attended the forum to hear from the city council and mayoral hopefuls before making his decision.

“Having listened to all the candidates I was able to make up my mind as to which ones I would support or which ones I would not support,” Mandel said.

In the end many voters like Mandel left the WHQR Candidate Forum more informed than before.

“Whatever we can do to help people get informed about the candidates and the issues that is what we want to do,” said Cleve Callison, WHQR Station Manager.
