NC group presses for black judicial nominees

Monday, October 31st, 2011

GREENVILLE, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s largest civil rights organization is calling on the state’s two U.S. senators to nominate black judges for positions on the federal bench.

The state chapter of the NAACP plans to announce a new campaign Monday aimed at securing the nomination of a black judge to the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The group plans to announce the campaign outside the federal courthouse in Greenville. They want supporters to call the offices of Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Kay Hagan.

North Carolina currently has one black judge on the federal bench. James Beatty, who serves in the Middle District, was appointed by President Bill Clinton.

The NAACP says a black judge has never served in the Eastern District, where nearly half the state’s African-American population lives.
