Pooches in Pink support Breast Cancer Awareness

Monday, October 24th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Even man’s best friend is doing their part in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Pooches in Pink at Paw Beach Pet Resort in Wilmington features an opportunity to have your dog’s tail or ears dyed pink. Painting costs $5-10 depending on how long your pooch would like to support the cause.

For canines that are too dark or afraid of paint, they can still show their support with a pink ribbon bandana.

“I know several people that have been affected by cancer and a fellow groomer that was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I think it’s just a great way to raise awareness and to raise money,” groomer Samantha Williams said.

All proceeds from the Pooches in Pink fundraiser will benefit Making Strides for the American Cancer Society

Five teens missing, may be headed to Tennessee

Monday, October 24th, 2011

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says five teenagers are missing and may be heading to Tennessee.

Investigators say Matthew Brett Miles and Katlin Marie Tennant, both 14 from Leland, and three other teens from Columbus County are missing. The Columbus County children are Christa Smith, Amber Yurgel and Kaitlyn Pagget, all 13.

Detectives say Tennant took her parents olive green 2008 Volvo with NC plate RWP-9142. A Facebook message says the teens were going to take a joy ride to Tennessee. At about 4:30 a.m. the Volvo ran out of gas in Lumberton near US 74/I-95. Deputies say a motorist helped the teens by putting gas in the car.

The only tie known to Tennessee is that Miles’s family vacationed in Gatlinburg a year ago.

If you have any information on where the children may be, call the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Attendance tops 1 million at NC State Fair

Monday, October 24th, 2011

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — More than 1 million people visited the North Carolina State Fair, for the second year in a row.

The fair said Monday that attendance for the 2011 edition of the fair totaled 1,009,173. That’s second only to last year’s 1,091,887.

State Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler says he’s pleased with the attendance figures, given the economy.

Vendors say many people attending the fair cut back on how much they spent.

One Raleigh man, Michael Click, confirmed the smaller spending. Click told the News & Observer of Raleigh he spent $300 for his family to visit the fair last year. Click says this year’s budget was $100.
