STATE COLLEGE, PA (AP) — Penn State administrators have canceled Joe Paterno’s weekly news conference in which he was expected to field questions about a sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach.

Paterno’s son Scott tells The Associated Press on Tuesday that the decision was made by President Graham Spanier’s office.

Scott Paterno says his father was disappointed and was prepared to take questions about the scandal as well as the upcoming game against Nebraska.

NC schools will punish parents for kids’ truancy

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

HALIFAX, NC (AP) — Halifax County parents who don’t make an effort to get their kids to school could find themselves behind bars.

The Daily and Sunday Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports that a new collaboration between the county courts, public schools and other agencies aims to hold parents accountable for students’ attendance.

A truancy court session will now be held once a month, with the first scheduled for Nov. 29.

If a student logs more than six unexcused absences, parents will be notified they could be prosecuted if the absences can’t be explained.

After more than 10 absences, the district attorney’s office will be notified. Parents convicted of the misdemeanor could face up to 120 days in jail.

Officials say the goal is to get kids in school.
