American Airlines files for Ch. 11 protection

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

FORT WORTH, TX (AP) — The parent companies of American Airlines and its regional affiliate American Eagle are filing for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

AMR Corp. and AMR Eagle Holding Corp. said Tuesday that they filed voluntary petitions to reorganize, saying it’s in the best
interest of the companies and its shareholders.

American, which began two daily flights between Wilmington and Chicago-O’Hare this summer, says it sought protection to reduce its costs and debt to remain competitive in the airline industry.

American was the only major US airline that didn’t file for bankruptcy protection after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

American says labor-contract rules force it to spend at least $600 million more than other airlines.

Jury selection begins in Eve Carson’s murder trial

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (WTVD) — Jury selection is now under way in the case of one of the men charged with killing Eve Carson.

About 50 potential jurors were interviewed Tuesday morning in the case of Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr.

Attorneys are conducting “individual jury selection” instead of using the traditional way where the entire jury pool sits in the courtroom. That means they are interviewing each potential juror one-by-one. The judge agreed to this process after the defense raised concerns about pre-trial publicity at a hearing earlier this month.

The goal of individual jury selection is to give both sides the chance to more closely vet potential jurors, ensuring they aren’t biased based due to the publicity this case has received. Some jurors have acknowledged that they’ve followed the case in the news and have already formed an opinion.
