Feeling sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner? Don’t blame the bird!

Friday, November 25th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After you enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal, you may have taken a nap. Some people claim it’s a side effect of the tryptophan in the turkey. But maybe it’s time to stop blaming the bird.

“Turkey is a great food. Honestly we should enjoy the turkey. That’s one of the healthiest things on the table,” registered dietician Diana Davis said.

Healthy, for sure. But a sleed aid?

“An hour from now I’m gonna be sitting somewhere in a chair, laid back,” said Mack Cooper, who was busy eating a Thanksgiving lunch at a local restaurant.

Many people drift off to dreams after a hearty helping of turkey and its numerous side dishes. Some claim it’s the tryptophan in the turkey that causes drowsiness.

Davis says you should actually look at what else is heaped up on your plate.

“It’s the quantity that they’ve eaten, especially the carbohydrate foods that are causing an increase in blood sugar, and with that comes the fatigue, the all I want to do is take a nap,” she said.

Tryptophan is actually found in foods we eat every day.

“Protein foods are rich in tryptophan,” Davis explained, “but the quantity of tryptophan that you’re consuming from that turkey dinner is not sufficient to produce that response.”

Rather than just laying back on the sofa after your meal, Davis recommends you get up and take a walk and allow your body to utilize some of that extra glucose that’s circulating in the bloodstream.
