Overturned pick-up on bridge slows morning commute

Friday, December 9th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wondering why you or a coworker was late to work this morning? Blame an accident on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

A pick-up truck overturned in the inside lane coming in from Brunswick County. Crews had to close the bridge for a while after 8 a.m. to flip the truck back over and clear the scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. No word on his injuries. The driver’s mother tells WWAY the brakes on the truck gave out, and he ran up on the guard rail and flipped over.

Former NC legislator Mackey facing DWI charge

Friday, December 9th, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A former state legislator and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is facing drunken driving charges.

The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that a Concord police report says Nick Mackey was arrested and charged with DWI and with having a revoked license early Sunday.

The police report says the Charlotte Democrat refused a portable breath test and any other roadside test. A blood sample was taken at the Cabarrus County jail, but the blood-alcohol content was not immediately available.

The one-term House member lost his law license for up to three years. He agreed last year to charges of dishonest conduct by failing to file timely tax returns from 2003 to 2006 and failing to act quickly enough to help a client.
