Teenager arrested after allegedly trying to steal police officer’s truck

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 17-year-old man has been arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering an Automobile after an off-duty police officer observed someone breaking into his own truck around 1:15 Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the officer saw Hunter Lee Costen look into a van that was parked in the officer’s driveway on Headwater Cove Lane and try unsuccessfully to open the door. When the officer saw Costen approach his truck, he retrieved his department-issued weapon, and went outside to find the suspect halfway inside the truck.

The officer placed Costen in handcuffs and called 911 for an on-duty officer to respond. His bond has not been confirmed.

Three other break-ins occurred in the same neighborhood the night before. Those cases are now under review.

Whale washes ashore near Carolina Beach boardwalk

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A whale has washed ashore near the Carolina Beach boardwalk. Aquarium officials believe the 15-foot whale is a sub-adult Minky whale. They say it has identified some shark interaction with the animal, but can’t say at this time that is what killed the whale.

People have been stopping by to take pictures, and say that the animal has some very noticeable shark bites. Several residents WWAY’s Ramon Herrera spoke with think the animal could have been attacked by the Great White shark that was spotted about 25 miles southeast of Wrightsville Beach more than a week ago.

A perimeter has been put up around the whale. Officials are urging the public not to touch the whale because there is a possibility it could have died of disease. Right now, the plan is to perform an ecropsy Thursday morning to see how the whale died. Until then, it will remain on shore near the Carolina Beach boardwalk.
