Attorneys for Durham novelist accused of murder continue attack on SBI agent

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Attorneys for a Durham novelist serving a
life sentence for the murder of his wife are continuing their
attack on the work of a State Bureau of Investigation agent who
testified at the trial.

SBI agent Duane Deaver was fired earlier this year for reasons
not related to his testimony at the murder trial of Michael
Peterson, convicted in 2003 of killing his wife, Kathleen, at their
Durham mansion.

SBI documents introduced at the hearing Wednesday showed that
Deaver had a strong bias for the prosecution early in his career.

On Tuesday, the SBI internal affairs director testified that
Deaver exaggerated his training and experience under oath when he
was certified as an expert witness in Peterson’s trial.

Peterson is trying to get a new trial.

STORMTRACK 3: Severe weather signals a return to winterlike conditions

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A strong cold front produced a line of severe thunderstorms across eastern North Carolina Wednesday evening. Storm winds in excess of 45 mph brought down trees in several counties, including Bladen and Robeson. Spotty power outages were reported all the way to the coast. Rain transitioned into snowfall in the North Carolina mountains, where an inch is possible in higher elevations.

The threat of severe weather will diminish later Wednesday night as the cold front slides offshore. Temperatures will drop quickly behind the front, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s for the rest of the week.

-Chief Meteorologist Jerry Jackson

Select Wind Observations (late Wednesday):

Oak Island            55 mph

Bald Head Island    52 mph

Topsail Beach        46 mph
