Duke lacrosse accuser can stand trial for murder

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

DURHAM, NC (AP) — A judge has ruled that the woman at the center of the Duke University lacrosse scandal is competent to be tried for murder.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Superior Court Judge Jim Hardin ruled Wednesday that 33-year-old Crystal Mangum can stand trial for murder in the death of her 46-year-old boyfriend. Reginald Daye was stabbed to death during a domestic dispute April 3 at his apartment in Durham. He died 10 days later.

A doctor who evaluated Mangum said she was alert, oriented and could describe the charges against her and the events leading up to her arrest.

Mangum’s attorney didn’t offer any other arguments.

Mangum falsely accused Duke University lacrosse players of rape in 2006. She’s being held in jail on $200,000 bond.

BREAKING: Sandusky arrested again on new sex charges

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

STATE COLLEGE, PA (ABC News) – Jerry Sandusky was arrested at home today by Pennsylvania state police in the wake of new sexual assault charges filed by a grand jury against him.

Sandusky was handcuffed and taken out of his home by state police and brought to an arraignment before a judge in Centre County, Pa., for the new charges, which include assaulting two boys involved in his Second Mile charity.

The men came forward in the wake of the earlier allegations against Sandusky, including 40 counts of child molestation, for which he was charged on Nov. 5.

According to the state attorney general, both men met Sandusky through the Second Mile charity, were plied with trips to football games, and were abused by him in Sandusky’s home. The man now identified as Victim 10 also claimed that Sandusky molested him in a Penn State campus swimming pool and exposed himself and asked for oral sex during a car ride.

The new charges include involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of children, and corruption of minors.

The new charges will be included in an already-scheduled preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 340,000 wreaths are on the move right now, all part of Wreaths Across America. Each year the organization coordinates hundreds of wreath-laying ceremonies on the second Saturday of December to honor and remember those who have served our country.

More than 300 of the wreaths arrived in Wilmington today. Volunteers will place them on grave sites Saturday at Wilmington National Cemetary.

“All the wreaths we have here have been sponsored by people from our community,” Cape Fear Composite Squadron Commander Jerry West said. “From all the veterans organizations, individuals. They went online and sponsored a wreath and paid for it.”

The Wreaths Across America ceremony starts Saturday at noon followed by the laying of wreaths on the grave sites.
