Subway’s Jared talks to students about healthy living

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Jared Fogle, the man made famous by losing weight on “The Subway Diet” visited Wilmington today to talk to kids about eating right and exercising.

The previously 425-pound sandwich spokesman is touring the country with his old, size 60 pants telling his story and encouraging healthy habits.

Fogle developed a weight problem as a team and claims eating right with subway helped him lose all the extra weight.

“Getting the chance to come to schools and share my story and really try to hopefully show the kids some of the mistakes I made growing up, you know, all the video game playing, all the internet, all the junk food, all the fast food and how my life sort of spiraled out of control and how I became over 400 pounds, and hopefully they can learn from that and not make the same mistakes that I made,” Fogle said.

Fogle, who talked to students at Myrtle Grove Middle School and Williston Middle School today, says he ate about 700 Subway sandwiches in a little less than a year at the Subway located near his college dorm.

THE RANT: Berger odd-man out at Monday’s commissioners meeting

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – While New Hanover County Commissioner Ted Davis being elected as chairman of the board was the headline at Monday night’s meeting, there were some other interesting issues one could see if they looked closely enough.

First and not surprisingly, Commissioner Brian Berger was late …. again. How is it that he can be early to a New Hanover County Community Action Inc. meeting to stake out his ex-girlfriend and break a protective order, but he can’t show up on time for the job he was elected to do?

Then, after the board elected Davis as chairman and a five minute recess, Davis made his first executive order as chairman; he demanded Berger and Commissioner Rick Catlin change seats. We assume Davis doesn’t want to sit next to Berger and wanted him as far away as possible. (Watch the switcheroo here http://newhanovernc.swagit.com/player.php?refid=12052011-55 at “Presentations” at 4:41 into the clip).

At the end of the meeting, Berger took the opportunity to explain why he went to the Community Action meeting, which ended up getting him arrested a second time for breaking a protective order. Berger’s ex-girlfriend Heather Blaylock is a Head Start teacher and works in that building. Even though Berger and Blaylock lived together for months, Berger claims he didn’t know she actually worked in that building.

Berger suggested that the investigation into fraud at Community Action should bother his fellow commissioners enough that they should attend the next meeting. However, Commissioner Jason Thompson threw it back at him, asking if he knew that the Clerk of the Board actually attends the meetings as their representative, and always sends out copious notes after each meeting. Berger sat silent and dumbfounded. (Watch the exchange here http://newhanovernc.swagit.com/player.php?refid=12052011-55 at “Item 9” at 2:17 into the clip.)

Rev. Billy Graham released from NC hospital

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — The Rev. Billy Graham was released from an Asheville hospital Tuesday after spending six days recovering from pneumonia, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Doctors decided to let the 93-year-old evangelist go home after he responded well to antibiotics and physical therapy to increase his strength after his latest illness, said Nancy Lindell, a spokeswoman for Mission Hospital.

Graham said he was grateful for the thoughts and prayers from around the world, according to a statement released by the
hospital.

“I also appreciated the wonderful treatment I received here from such caring doctors and nurses, and feel I have made some new friends,” Graham said. “But I am especially looking forward to seeing my home decorated for Christmas and spending the holidays with members of my family.”

Graham was admitted to the hospital Nov. 30 after suffering from congestion, a cough and slight fever. He was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Doctors used the six-day hospital stay to conduct some routine tests on Graham that he had already scheduled. They sent him home with orders to continue his therapy to increase his strength and mobility, according to the hospital.

“We are gratified that he has had a good response to treatment and we’re committed to good home care to continue his improvement,” said Dr. Lucian Rice, Graham’s personal physician.

Graham plans to continue writing his next book, which he said will summarize his six decades of work. Graham has led a worldwide ministry that packed stadiums with believers and has counseled every US president since Harry Truman.
