RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Officials say a Raleigh fire captain is dead after a traffic accident in which his daughter was seriously injured.

Raleigh Fire Marshal Rusty Styons.said Jonathan Scott Nipper, a captain with Fire Station One in downtown Raleigh, was killed in an accident near Oxford around noon Wednesday. No additional details were available.

Oxford is 40 miles north of Raleigh.

Fire Division Chief Peter Brock said 10-year-old Gracie Nipper is in stable condition at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Brock said she suffered multiple fractures and was undergoing surgery Wednesday night.

Nipper is the second fire department commander killed in a traffic accident in as many years. In December 2009, veteran Harry P. “Flip” Kissinger died after suffering head trauma following an accident in north Raleigh.

Dip in NC gasoline prices may spark holiday travel

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A sharp drop in gasoline prices since spring may be the spark North Carolina motorists need to travel during the Christmas holiday.

AAA Carolinas says 2.4 million motorists are expected to drive 50 miles or more during the holiday travel period beginning Friday and lasting through Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Since May 6, gasoline prices in North Carolina have dropped 64 cents. The average price statewide is the cheapest since it hit $3.14 a gallon in early February, and the lowest since peaking at nearly $3.88 on May 6.

The motor club also says gas prices in North Carolina are averaging 13 cents less than before Thanksgiving. Prices are expected to remain stable or slightly decrease due to a decline in demand and the congressional budget impasse.
