Man arrested for breaking into homes, stealing victims’ identities

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Sheriff’s detectives say they’ve solved a string of burglaries where the suspect stole identities.

Investigators say the crimes happened in the Meadowbrook and Gordon Woods neighborhoods. Deputies have charged Landrick Seales, 20, with seven crimes, including burglary, breaking and entering, larceny and identity theft.

Investigators say Seales stole personal and banking information from homes to make fraudulent purchases online for electronic equipment and musical instruments. They say he also applied for credit in the victims’ names.

Seales is in the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $50,000 secure bond.

NC gasoline tax to rise almost 4 cents in January to record 39 cents

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – As expected, North Carolina’s gasoline tax is going up by almost 4 cents a gallon starting with the new year.

Revenue Secretary David Hoyle announced Tuesday the state motor fuels tax would grow by 3.9 cents per gallon to a record 38.9 cents starting Jan 1. State law directs the tax be recalculated automatically twice a year based on a formula linked to wholesale gas prices. The tax rose by 2.5 cents per gallon in July.

The upcoming tax increase falls in line with estimates made by the Legislature’s nonpartisan fiscal staff.

The North Carolina House voted last month to cap the tax at 35 cents for six months, but the Senate declined to take up the bill, saying it wasn’t the right time to consider the change.
