Henderson County sets deadline for absent sheriff

Monday, December 19th, 2011

HENDERSONVILLE, NC (AP) — Henderson County commissioners have told the county sheriff he has until the end of the work week to either return to his job or request a formal leave of absence to deal with his mental health condition.

The Times-News of Hendersonville reports the commission sent a letter to Sheriff Rick Davis last week saying if he doesn’t make a decision by noon Friday, they will consider his actions a refusal to perform the duties of sheriff. That is one of the reasons a judge can remove a sheriff from office in North Carolina.

Davis left his job on Nov. 23, saying he was taking sick time to undergo treatment for a diagnosis of manic bipolar disorder. Since then, he has refused to talk to commissioners about his private life.

NC officer shoots man who flees traffic stop

Monday, December 19th, 2011

HICKORY, NC (AP) — North Carolina investigators are looking into why a Hickory police officer critically wounded a man fleeing an attempted traffic stop.

The Hickory Police Department says Master Police Officer Bruce Bumgarner tried to stop a vehicle late Saturday.

Officers say 36-year-old Irecas Valentine of Hickory sped away, wrecked his sports utility vehicle and threatened when he was cornered by Bumgarner. Valentine was shot and taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in critical condition.

Hickory Police Maj. Clyde Deal would not say where or how many times Valentine was shot.

Police say Bumgarner chased Valentine’s vehicle through a residential neighborhood and a grassy field before the escaping SUV crashed and rolled over.

Police say Valentine ran, then stopped and faced the pursuing officer with his hands in his pockets.
