Cops: Charlotte woman slain, suspect kills self

Monday, December 19th, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Investigators say they found a body inside a burning home in Charlotte, and they think the suspect in the killing committed suicide in a shed nearby.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they got a call about a fire and a possible break-in at a home in northeast Charlotte early Sunday morning. Authorities say the body of 32-year-old Stephanie Ott was found in the burning garage, and homicide detectives were called.

As police searched the neighborhood, they found 52-year-old Robert Stover inside a shed at a nearby home. Authorities say Stover shot and killed himself after officers confronted him.

Investigators say Ott and Stover were roommates.

Closings set in student body president’s death

Monday, December 19th, 2011

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (AP) — The trial for a man charged with killing a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president is coming to an end.

A judge scheduled closing arguments in the murder trial of Laurence Lovette for Monday morning.

Prosecutors say Lovette and a co-defendant already serving a life sentence after pleading guilty kidnapped Eve Carson from her Chapel Hill home in March 2008 and forced her to withdraw $1,400 with her bank card before shooting her and dumping her body in the street.

Carson was from Athens, Ga., and was getting ready to graduate.

If Lovette is convicted, he won’t face the possibility of the death penalty because he was a minor at the time.

Prosecutors called dozens of witnesses over seven days, while Lovette’s attorneys called no witnesses.

Respiratory infection keeps Coble in hospital

Monday, December 19th, 2011

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — Doctors say U.S. Rep. Howard Coble needs to stay in a Washington hospital for several more days as he recovers from an upper respiratory infection.

Coble hoped to be released on Sunday, but physicians at George Washington University Hospital said the 80-year-old North Carolina Republican was too weak to be discharged. Coble entered the hospital on Tuesday on the advice of his attending doctor.

A statement from the congressman says doctors say they will continue to try to increase his sodium levels and build his strength.

Coble was first elected in 1984 to represent the district around the eastern and southern part of the Triad.
