14-year-old charged with armed robbery

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have charged a child with armed robbery of a food delivery driver. It happened just after 10 p.m. Monday.

The delivery driver said he was robbed at gunpoint while trying to deliver a large order of Chinese food on Hunt Club Road.

Responding officers set up a perimeter. A K-9 team began a track and found multiple containers of food behind several units in Lullwater Village.

Based on the description of the robber and officers’ previous contacts in the area, they identified a 14-year-old as the suspect. Both the victim and a witness subsequently identified him as the robber, and he was detained on a secure custody order.

The suspect’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile.

Bank hostage sues police over treatment

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

CARY, NC (AP) — One of the hostages who survived a standoff at a Cary bank is suing the town’s police department, saying they mistreated him after he was released by the would-be robber.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Lee Everett sued last month, claiming he was victimized because he is black.

The 52-year-old Everett was one of the people in a Wachovia Bank branch in Cary last year when 19-year-old Devon Mitchell entered the building and claimed to have a gun.

Mitchell was shot and killed by police, who later discovered he was unarmed.

Everett says after he was released by Mitchell, he was thrown to the ground, handcuffed and dragged across a field by police.

Cary officials say the lawsuit is without merit.
