NC woman shoots and kills son after fight

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

LONG VIEW, NC (AP) — Police in Long View are investigating the shooting of a 21-year-old man by his mother.

The Hickory Daily Record reports that no one has been charged in the shooting that killed Justin Barger on Friday in the town just west of Hickory.

Police Lt. Rick Coffey says Justin Barger was drinking and assaulted his parents.

Coffey says 53-year-old Karen Barger shot her son once with a handgun. He died at the home.

No one answered the phone at the Bargers’ home early Tuesday.

Coffey says police are investigating, and will turn the results of their probe over to the district attorney to determine if charges should be filed.

NC police see progress in resuming investigations

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

SPRING LAKE, NC (AP) — A once-troubled Cumberland County police department is investigating violent crimes for the first time since 2007, and the chief says he’s happy with their progress.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Spring Lake police investigated seven violent felonies between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, and all but two of the cases have been closed.

Town police officers were stripped of their felony investigation powers in 2007 after a botched child death investigation and subsequent review of the department.

Two years later, the department’s remaining police powers were suspended after a State Bureau of Investigation probe.

Chief Troy McDuffie took over in 2010 and has worked to make improvements.

McDuffie says the first three months of investigating violent felonies shows the department has moved on from the past.
