Cooper hails new NC law tracking meth ingredients

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper says a new law that tracks the main ingredient used to make the drug methamphetamine is already producing impressive results.

Cooper said Thursday that the law, which took effect Jan. 1, has already blocked over 1,600 illegal purchases of cold medicine used to make meth.

The law requires pharmacies to use an electronic system that tracks purchases of products containing the ingredient pseudoephedrine.

Cooper says the new law comes just in time, as 2011 saw 344 meth lab busts in North Carolina, an all-time record.

Christopher Gauthier, executive director of the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, says pharmacies want to help prevent the manufacture of meth. But Gauthier says he’s worried the law creates new workloads for community pharmacists.

Man shot, killed after breaking into Chadbourn home

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) — A man is dead after being shot early this morning when he reportedly tried to break into a Columbus County home. It happened at a house on North Wilkes Street in Chadbourn around 1:30 a.m. Police say Eddie Best Jr. died at the hospital about an hour later.

A resident of the house, who did not want to be identified, said he had just come home when one of his roommates told him not to go inside because of what happened.

The roommate told him he heard someone outside the door. When the people outside kicked in the door, the man inside opened fire, hitting Best in the back and buttocks. Best reportedly collapsed at the side of the home. The other suspect ran off and is still at large.

Police say Best lived a few blocks away on South Wilkes Street.

Neither of the two people who were in the house at the time of the break-in were hurt.

Witnesses say SBI was on scene to help in the investigation. Chadbourn Police say their investigation continues because they’ve received conflicting stories about what happened.
