VOTE 2012: Sykes says she’ll challenge Warren for commission seat

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A vocal critic says she will challenge Charles Warren for his seat on the Brunswick County Commission.

Pat Sykes says she will run against Warren in May’s Republican primary for the District 3 seat. Dr. Joe Agovino of Southport announced earlier this month he will also challenge Warren.

Sykes and Warren have long been at odds as members of Brunswick County’s Social Services Board, which Warren chairs. Last month, Warren threw Sykes out of a board meeting for being disruptive, which led to the Brunswick County Commission to look at ways to remove Warren from the Social Services Board.

Treasury Secretary to tour NC energy plant

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is planning to tour an energy plant in Charlotte and talk to business leaders as he touts the president’s policies to strengthen the economy.

His visit comes one day after President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

Geithner is stopping at Siemens Energy, which has invested more than $350 million in Charlotte in the last four years — an investment that will create more than 1,000 jobs. The company’s Charlotte plant recently underwent a $130 million expansion to strengthen its export capabilities.

After that, Geithner is meeting with local business leaders at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce to discuss the economy and the president’s efforts to create jobs.

The Democratic National Convention is being held in Charlotte in September.
