NC appeals court weighs value of dead pet’s life

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A North Carolina appeals court is considering the value of a dog’s life.

WRAL-TV reports that the state Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday in a lawsuit by Herb and Nancy Shera of Wilmington.

Their 12-year-old Jack Russell terrier Laci died at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. Vets accidentally inserted a feeding tube into her wind-pipe instead of her esophagus, drowning the dog over several hours.

State officials told the couple they were entitled to $350 in compensation to replace Laci with another Jack Russell.

The Sheras say their dog was special and her life was worth more. Their attorney says the couple is entitled to the $28,000 they invested in her treatment for cancer at N.C. State.

2 NC wrestling coaches fired after athlete hurt

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

GASTONIA, NC (AP) — Two Gaston County high school wrestling coaches have been fired after an athlete was injured in practice.

The Gaston Gazette reports that South Point High School wrestling coach Jock Smith and assistant coach John Goodwin were fired on Monday by Gaston County Schools.

Goodwin said Tuesday it was an accident and he didn’t do it on purpose.

The father of 15-year-old Cody Merrill says his son suffered a broken collarbone last week when Goodwin jerked him into the air and threw him down to the mat. Shane Merrill said his son’s injury won’t require surgery, but he will be wearing a sling and must refrain from physical activity for up to eight weeks, meaning he will miss the rest of the wrestling season, which was his first.
