Metals found in water at coal plants

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — North Carolina regulators have found higher than normal levels of metals in groundwater near all 14 of the state’s coal-fired power plants run by Duke Energy and Progress Energy.

The Charlotte Observer reports the waste left over from burning coal for electricity holds metals that can be toxic in high doses. But the iron and manganese the state Division of Water Quality most widely detected are not considered health risks.

Utilities produce millions of tons of coal ash each year. It’s stored by mixing it with water in ponds or in landfills. Ash became an environmental lightning rod after a massive spill at a Tennessee waste pond in 2008.

The utilities say the groundwater results are similar to earlier findings and to background groundwater unaffected by the ash basins.

Alamance County jail inmate hurt in fight

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

BURLINGTON, NC (AP) — An Alamance County jail inmate is hospitalized after a fight with another inmate.

The Times-News of Burlington reported 57-year-old Thomas Lumpkin Sr. was taken to the hospital after a fight with 48-year-old George Jones.

The sheriff’s department said it could not release details on Lumpkin’s condition because of federal guidelines. A hospital spokesman said Lumpkin’s family had had asked that no information be released on his condition.

Jailers said they found the men fighting Friday morning and used a Taser to break up the fight. Sheriff’s spokesman Randy Jones says Lumpkin suffered a cut on the back of his head.

Jones says the fight is under investigation.

Lumpkin was in jail on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery.

George Jones was being held on larceny charges.
