NC Sheriff: Man hit infant to avoid female assault

Friday, January 20th, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) — The Onslow County sheriff says a man slapped a child to avoid a second charge of assaulting a female.

The Jacksonville Daily News reported that 21-year-old Michael Marvin Hansley of Jacksonville is charged with misdemeanor counts of child abuse, assault on a child and contributing to the abuse of a juvenile.

Sheriff Ed Brown says Hansley was upset with 22-year-old Kristyn Michelle Smith when she got a cell phone call from another man Nov. 6. Brown says Hansley told investigators he slapped the 21-month-old child because he would have faced a second charge of assault on a female if he had hit Smith.

Smith has been charged with giving false information when she took the child to a hospital.

It was not clear if Hansley and Smith have attorneys.

FIRST ON 3: Flight to ILM delayed because of smoke on board

Friday, January 20th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A flight from Charlotte to Wilmington was delayed this morning after reports of smoke on board. ILM Operations Director Gary Broughton confirms US Airways flight 2310 returned to the gate at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport after the crew smelled smoke.

A passenger on the flight e-mailed the WWAY newsroom and said smoke filled the plane.

“Well here’s a first,” the e-mail from D Pitman said, “I just evacuated my plane (US Air flight 2301 to Wilmington) due to the plane filling-up with smoke. Emergency and Maintenance are onboard checking things out. US Air is going to put us on another airplane.”

The flight was scheduled to leave CLT at 7:50 a.m. and arrive at ILM at 8:46 a.m., but its arrival has been delayed until at least 9:10 a.m.

Lane shift will be permanent on I-40 in Raleigh

Friday, January 20th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Some lanes will be closed on Interstate 40 in Raleigh on Sunday as transportation workers make a temporary lane shift permanent.

A lane had been temporarily shifted on I-40 West at the Clayton Bypass since September to determine if it improved traffic flow.

Transportation officials say the change did improve traffic flow and travel time so they will make the change permanent.

The work Sunday morning will close the left lane on I-40 West. Work is also planned on the ramp from the Bypass onto I-40.
