FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Driver charged with DWI after crashing into liquor store

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — A Boiling Spring Lakes man is charged with drunk driving after investigators say he drove into a liquor store last night.

Boiling Spring Lakes Police charged Steven Dale Earley, 52, with DWI after the crash that started a fire at the ABC store at 3130 George II Highway just before 9 p.m. He could also face property damage charges.

Earley reportedly had to be pulled out of the burning truck by a bystander. He was taken to the hospital. His injuries are unknown, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

Firefighters had the fire out by 9:45 p.m., but heavy smoke was still coming from the store. The building suffered significant damage.

FIRST ON 3: Five-year-old allegedly raped by classmate at school

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says it has received reports of a sexual assault involving students at an elementary school. Capt. David Nobles says there are conflicting reports, but that the alleged victim and the alleged attacker are both five years old.

The incident allegedly took place at Tabor City Elementary on February 7. Capt. Nobles says the allegations have been referred to the Department of Social Services, because under state law a child under six cannot be help criminally liable.

Columbus County Schools Superintendent Alan Faulk has not yet returned our call for comment.
