Ex-DMV official sentenced to 18 months in prison

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — A former head in the state Division of Motor Vehicles regional law enforcement office in Fayetteville will begin serving an 18-month sentence in federal prison for mail fraud in April.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that 54-year-old Bill Toman also must pay $15,000 in restitution.

Toman had pleaded guilty in November to three counts of mail fraud. He was arrested in 2009, when he was leading a 12-county region of DMV law enforcement offices in Fayetteville.

Court documents say Toman was accused of pocketing $15,000 he solicited from three insurance companies under the claim that the money would be used for law enforcement.

He begins serving his sentence April 1.

Man hurt in wreck after chase with Raleigh police

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A man who led police in Raleigh and Garner on a chase has been hurt in a wreck on Interstate 40.

Thirty-five-year-old Steve Earl Purnell was taken to WakeMed hospital Tuesday afternoon for treatment.

Police have charged Purnell with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, felony speeding to elude arrest, driving with a revoked license and speeding.

Highway Patrol Trooper J.C. Manning says the man fleeing police was traveling about 100 mph when he ran off the road, struck a ditch and flipped over.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said an officer spotted the man’s car and determined that he had outstanding warrants. Sughrue says the man sped away when the officer tried to arrest him.

It was not clear if Purnell has a lawyer.

Pinehurst mayor says her email hacked

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

PINEHURST, NC (AP) — The mayor of Pinehurst is not stranded in London. And she doesn’t need money for a hotel room and a flight back to North Carolina.

Mayor Nancy Fiorillo told the Fayetteville Observer on Tuesday that her personal email account was hacked
over the weekend and a number of messages were sent in her name.

The email says Fiorillo was mugged in London and lost everything and needed money for a hotel room and a flight home.

Fiorillo has not been in London.

Fiorillo said she had a problem with her personal email over the weekend and sent some account information to what she thought was her service provider.

She worries she may have sent information to the hacker. She’s now worried about her credit cards.

NC animal group works on commercial breeding law

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The director of the Humane Society of North Carolina says she’s working with animal control officers and legislators on a bill to regulate commercial dog breeders.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that Kim Alboum said she hopes a raid last week in Stokes County will spur the state to change its law. In that raid, 160 dogs were found sleeping in their own waste, in makeshift kennels that had exposed wires and mice infestations.

A bill to regulate commercial breeders passed the Senate in 2009, but it died in the House after pressure from groups including the North Carolina Pork Council and the Farm Bureau.

The Humane Society says at least 19 states have some regulations for commercial dog breeders.
