Winston-Salem police change checkpoint policy

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Winston-Salem’s police chief says the department has responded to complaints from the American Civil Liberties Union and revised its policy on driver’s license checkpoints.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Chief Scott Cunningham told a City Council committee about the changes Monday night.

Police checkpoints now require approval from an officer with the rank of lieutenant or higher. The department also created new forms to gather data on checkpoints. The forms include the location of the checkpoint, the purpose of the checkpoint, and information about citations written or arrests made.

Cunningham says police did not collect data the same way at each checkpoint.

A review last year showed that 85 percent of the traffic checkpoints set up by Winston-Salem police in an 11-month period happened in predominantly minority areas.

NC school coach suspended for recorded tirade

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – Officials have suspended a softball coach at a Forsyth County school for five days without pay because of a recorded tirade against a student.

The Winston-Salem-Forsyth County school board decided Monday to suspend East Forsyth softball coach Mike Muse for five days without pay.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that schools Superintendent Don Martin says he thinks Muse is remorseful about the hour-long tirade, during which he cursed 15-year-old Dillon Tschrnko.

The teen’s parents say they wanted more than a suspension.

Dillon Tschrnko had told Muse that texts between the coach and a 16-year-old on the girls’ softball team were weird.

The school’s resource officer, James Deeney of the Kernersville Police Department, also participated in the conversation. Officials say he was temporarily suspended last week and removed from the school.
