NC ALE agents help make arrests in Rocky Mount

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) – State Alcohol Law Enforcement officials
say they’ll continue operations such as one this past weekend in
Rocky Mount, where 35 arrests were made on charges including
selling cocaine, possessing a stolen firearm, driving while
impaired and operating an illegal alcohol establishment.

Officials say more than a dozen ALE special agents worked with
federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Among the
arrests were the operators of two illegal “shot houses,” where
authorities say alcohol was sold.

The Rocky Mount Police Department, Nash and Edgecombe County
sheriff’s offices and Sharpsburg police participated in the
enforcement activity along with three Department of Public Safety
agencies: the state Highway Patrol, Division of Adult Correction
and ALE.

ALE Director John Ledford says the agency will continue to
assist local law enforcement in concentrated operations.

Former university doctor running for NC governor

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A 90-year-old Harnett County man says he’s
running North Carolina governor on a platform of creating a state
foundation that would allow North Carolina government to reduce or
possibly eliminate taxes over time.

Physician Bruce Blackmon filed Tuesday at the State Board of
Elections to become a candidate in the Democratic primary. Another
Harnett County resident – former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge – plans to
file his candidate papers Wednesday morning, a few hours before the

Blackmon is the former director of health services for what is
now Campbell University in Buies Creek. His platform is based on
setting aside money over time to build up the state foundation.

Blackmon and Etheridge will bring to at least a dozen the number
of gubernatorial candidates this year.

NC House group to look at jobless benefit fraud

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The North Carolina House is forming a task
force to see what it can do to discourage people from attempting to
bilk the state unemployment insurance system of benefits.

House Speaker Thom Tillis announced Tuesday the creation of the
panel that’s being asked to offer recommendations to the full
General Assembly before it reconvenes for the budget-adjusting
session in mid-May.

The group will examine whether unemployment fraud penalties are
similar to those for other acts of fraud and how to make workforce
training and job placement a key mission of the recently revamped
state Division of Unemployment Security.

Lawmakers already are looking for a way to pay back $2.6 billion
the state owes the federal government for paying unemployment
benefits when state unemployment insurance funds ran out.
