Soles upgraded to good condition

Monday, February 13th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former state Sen. R.C. Soles is listed in good condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Soles underwent heart bypass surgery Friday, according to his Tabor City law firm.

Soles, the longest serving member of the General Assembly in state history, left office in 2011.

For years, the former senator has been in the spotlight after allegations of sexual misconduct and assault involving several young men.

His contentious relationships with the men have led to their arrests, many court proceedings and jail time.

Case on ‘bra-lift search’ goes to NC Supreme Court

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The state Supreme Court will hear arguments involving a student at an alternative school in Brunswick County who had to untuck her shirt and pull out her bra with her thumb as part of a search for pills.

The attorney who represents the student will argue that search in front of two men violated constitutional guarantees involving unwarranted searches.

Attorney Geeta Kapur said she believes the court’s ruling will apply to all public school students, about 1.5 million of them, and not just those in alternative schools.

The case involves a 15-year-old who attended Brunswick County Academy, a school for at-risk children.

The state Attorney General’s Office represents the school. Its court brief says students at an alternative school have a lesser expectation of privacy than other students.

NC governor candidate Faison suffers messy divorce

Monday, February 13th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — One of the first Democrats to announce his bid for North Carolina governor is involved in a protracted and messy divorce filled with nasty accusations.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports state Rep. Bill Faison of Orange County says he doesn’t expect his personal life to interfere with his bid for governor. Faison says the nasty accusations are untrue.

The wealthy medical malpractice lawyer married Lindy Faison in 1988 and they had four children before deciding to split in 2008.

The continuing fight over assets includes Lindy Faison accusing her ex-husband of having an ongoing affair with a waitress. The back-and-forth accusations include that Lindy Faison either did all the chores on their farm or that she refused to do any work on it.

NC hospitals don’t want trials for disputed bills

Monday, February 13th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A Charlotte man stuck with a $14,000 hospital bill he calls inflated and unreasonable wants North Carolina’s Supreme Court to rule that courts are open to decide fairness.

The state Supreme Court is scheduled Monday to hear Robert Talford’s argument that his hospital should have to prove why it’s reasonable to charge him up to 24 times more than a local pharmacy for medications.

The state’s hospitals want the high court to rule they can collect overdue bills without a trial.

Lawyers for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority say of course a pill is cheaper at a street-corner drug store. Hospital lawyers say the difference is that pill’s costs pay for nurses and other staff and to maintain a clean and supervised room 24 hours a day.
