Roanoak Rapids man charged with stealing swords

ROANOKE RAPIDS (AP)– A Roanoke Rapids man has been arrested and accused of stealing nearly 50 samurai swords.
20-year-old Anthony Logan Childers is charged with second degree burglary, obtaining property by false pretense, possession of stolen property, larceny after breaking and entering and damaging personal property.
A resident had reported the theft of a collection of 48 samurai swords valued at more than $4,000 late last month. Jewelry and a digital camcorder also were taken.
The thief had tried to sell the swords at several locations. Officers have recovered 11 of the swords.
It was not clear Wednesday if Childers has a lawyer.

Wilmington fire crews battle apartment fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Wilmington Fire Department crews battled a structure fire Wednesday night at 806 Orange Street. First arriving crews were faced with heavy fire conditions. The structure contained 5 apartments on the first level, 2 on the second level and 1 on the third. The power has been eliminated from the structure and all occupants will be displaced. No injuries have been reported. The fire is under control at this time but crews will remain at the scene for a while to totally extinguish the fire. At least one cat has been found dead. The American Red Cross is assisting with relocating occupants. Fire Investigators are on the scene working to determine the cause.

Business up at state ports

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More money is sailing in and out of our state. The NC Ports Authority reports business is up over the past year.

In Wilmington, bulk cargo increased 16 percent last year. The port of wilmington showed significant gains in movement of agricultural products with more feed and grain moving throughout southeastern north carolina.

The Ports Authority expects continued success in container and bulk volumes this year.
