Critics quiz Durham DA over feud with NC judge

Monday, February 27th, 2012

DURHAM, NC (AP) — Durham County’s embattled top prosecutor is facing critics who charge she’s not fit for the office for feuding with a judge.

Durham DA Tracey Cline is fighting to save her job as lawyers who lodged complaints against her ask her questions under oath Monday. Cline could follow disgraced Duke lacrosse prosecutor Michael Nifong as an elected Durham DA removed from the job for performance.

Attorney Stephen Lindsay asked Cline on Monday about her determination to make changes after being elected in 2008 after Nifong and a couple of interim, appointed Durham prosecutors.

Cline was suspended last month after accusing Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson of misconduct. Other judges ruled her accusations were meritless.

Veteran Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood will decide whether Cline should be permanently removed.

Commerce chief Crisco considering lieutenant governor run

Monday, February 27th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco is not ready to say yet whether he’ll run for lieutenant governor.

The Randolph County Democrat and longtime textile company executive said Monday that some people whose opinions he values have asked him to consider a bid for the No. 2 job in the state. Crisco didn’t say whether he had made his decision but said he would put out a statement later. Crisco and other potential candidates have until noon Wednesday to file for office.

Crisco previously served on the Asheboro City Council. Gov. Bev Perdue appointed him commerce secretary in 2009.

Two fellow Democrats – Linda Coleman and Eric Mansfield – and three Republicans already have filed for the job.

Lt. Gov Walter Dalton is running for governor.
