WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Rather than a phone call or an email, voters got he unique opportunity Sunday to bring their concerns in person to area elected officials. The annual Face to Face with Your Legislators event featured representatives from Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover Counties as well as state senators and United States Representative Mike McIntyre.
Politicians and voters agree that the best part is getting personal with each other.
“This is one of the most important events that we hold all year long,” said Rep. Susi Hamilton. “It is because there is that personal connection between the politician and constituent.”
“I think that sometimes you get a feeling that the representatives are sitting in their office and they’re not really thinking about the people in their district, and here you can really see they care,” said Adrienne Ochis, a New Hanover County voter.
For much of the public, a downtown ballpark continues to be a major topic of discussion and that was once again the case at Sunday’s event.
City Council says there is still no concrete proposal and that although a final decision has not been made on exactly how it would be financed, there are benefits to baseball in the Port City.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity,” said Wilmington City Council Member Kevin O’Grady. “IF the numbers are right, absolutely I want it to happen because it will really kick up this city a notch and it will pay off in the long term I believe.”
Whether it was baseball or other issues, concerned voters say they benefited from their conversations with many of the politicians including U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre.
“It was awesome,” said Carolanne Bullard, a New Hanover County voter. “I came here with some issues that are on the federal level and I was crying and he (Rep. McIntyre) says he wants me in his office next week so I can start talking to somebody and getting some things moving. It gives me hope that I’m not going through this for no reason or by myself.”
Public comment tables were available for senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan at the event as well.
