CFCC engine program gets heavy-duty donation

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Marine Engine Technician Program at Cape Fear Community College just got a leg up on the competition.

The program got two 6,000-pound boat engines today for students to break down and rebuild.

Billy Jack Croson says after he was laid off he decided to head back to school so he can better compete with younger potential employees. He says donations like this help him learn the biggest and best technology available.

“It’s the latest and greatest engines that are out there, so having the opportunity to work on what’s in the field instead of stuff that’s 10 years old, coming out, not knowing what I’m doing, I’m working on the stuff that’s in the boats now. When I graduate I will be able to walk into a shop and be able to work on these engines right away,” Croson said.

Gregory Poole and Caterpillar hope the two donated engines, worth about $140,000, do just that. A spokesman for Gregory Poole says there is a drastic need for knowledgeable technicians, and that the program at CFCC is helping prepare students for a promising future.

WWAY anchors, reporters share love of reading during Read Across America

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Students at Forest Hills Global Elementary in Wilmington are learning this week just how important reading is from some of us who do it for a living.

Today WWAY’s Cacky Catlett visited Mrs. Freck’s class to send a very important message to first graders. It’s all part of Read Across America. It’s an annual event the week of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

Students Cacky visited today are excited about reading.

“It lets me learn that bears eat grass, and they eat trees,” student Katie Fairbanks said.

Katie said she reads a lot at school, and it’s one of her favorite parts of the day.

Read Across America is happening at schools around the country all week. Many of us here at WWAY have been happy to take part.
