Appeals court rules in legal fight over dead dog

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina Court of Appeals has waded into a legal tussle over the wrongful death of a Jack Russell terrier named Laci.

Nancy and Herbert Shera of Wilmington sued North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine after their dog died in 2007 following a botched tube feeding while receiving cancer treatment.

The university agreed to wave $2,755 in medical bills and pay $350, the estimated cost for a new dog. Laci’s owners demanded more than $28,000, initiating a 4-year legal fight over whether beloved pets have intrinsic worth.

In a 20-page ruling issued Tuesday, the appeals court affirmed that state law does not entitle Laci’s owners to more than the breed’s replacement cost.

The couple’s lawyer said they are now considering an appeal to the state Supreme Court.

NC man killed father over graduate school lies

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

GREENVILLE, NC (AP) — An East Carolina University dropout says he shot and killed his father to cover up a three-year charade in which he lied about attending graduate school to get money from his family.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville reports 26-year-old Kevin Kleber pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder.

He was sentenced to between nine and 12 years in prison.

Police say Kleber shot Roy Kleber of Vero Beach, FL, in January 2011. The older man had come to Greenville to help his son move to what Kevin Kleber claimed was a new job at Walt Disney World after getting a master’s degree.

In reality, Kevin Kleber never attended grad school while taking money from his father. He initially tried to blame the shooting on a black man, but eventually confessed.
