Animal Control officers join Sheriff’s Office ahead of change

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has gone to the dogs. Kind of.

The Sheriff’s Office takes over Animal Control Services tomorrow.

The current animal control officers were sworn in as part of the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office says because deputies have more authority, the change will mean even better services.

“The Animal Services Unit is in an enforcement situation with the animals, so falling underneath the Sheriff’s Office, with our chain of command and our protocol for doing things, I believe that will be a better fit,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer said.

The Sheriff’s Office says the decision was not made because of problems within animal control, but simply to help make the organization more effective.

FIRST ON 3: Meridian Village fire ruled accident

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say an apartment building fire last week was an accident. Deputy Fire Marshal Grant Vick says investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how the fire started at Meridian Village Apartments on Northchase Parkway Thursday.

Vick says the fire started on the back patio of one of the downstairs apartments around 3:20 p.m., but it’s unclear what actually sparked it. Investigators are still talking to tenants and witnesses.

Vick said the fire caused more than $500,000 worth of damage to the building, which was built in 1993 and 1994. He said the 2009 fire code requires apartments with patios include a sprinkler in the patio areas, which would have helped in this fire.

“It might not have put it out, but it might have held it in check,” Vick said.

Special needs student dies after arriving at school on bus

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A student from Rachel Freeman School of Engineering died this morning after arriving at school.

Wilmington Police Department spokesman Det. Kevin Smith said the eight-year-old girl was unresponsive when a school bus for special needs students arrived at the school after 8 a.m. Smith said the child was in a wheelchair. He said the school nurse performed CPR on the girl until EMTs arrived, took over and took her to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she died.

School district spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum says counselors are at the school to help the students and staff. She says no other information is available at this time.

Investigators have not released the name of the child as they notify and continue to investigate.
