New Duke Cancer Institute opening

Monday, February 20th, 2012

DURHAM, NC (AP)– Duke University’s new cancer center is ready to open its doors.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reports on Sunday that the Duke Cancer Institute is opening this week. The $235 million facility is seven stories tall and has 267,000 square feet of space. It includes a rooftop garden, a radiation vault with seven-foot thick concrete walls and twice as many chemotherapy infusion bays.

The new center brings together different specialties and facilities from Duke’s 40 cancer divisions that had been scattered across the medical campus.

Officials say the cancer center is the first major component to be completed of a gigantic, $880 million building spree. A new hospital tower, medical pavilion and learning center are still under construction.

STORMTRACK 3: Rain still falling locally, changing to snow in other areas

Monday, February 20th, 2012

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WWAY) — A major storm system has provided needed rain across our area. Colder air is invading from the west, resulting in a changeover to snow from Raleigh northward. Up to 3 inches is possible across northern North Carolina.

Around here, a few snow showers are possible. However, relatively warm ground temperatures will hamper any major accumulation. Ironically, severe thunderstorms have been reported along parts of the coast Sunday evening, from Carteret County to Hyde County.

The storm system will exit our area early Monday.

Bat infestation closes hospital

Monday, February 20th, 2012

ROCKINGHAM, NC (AP) — A Rockingham hospital has temporarily closed its doors until a colony of bats can be removed.

Officials with FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital said Saturday that no new patients would be accepted and existing patients had been moved out for the time being. The hospital has been working with a professional bat removal service to expel the bats, which have been living in the walls.

Hospital employees called county officials about the problem on Friday, and teams inspected air handling units, patient rooms, common areas and ceiling tiles, among other areas.

Richmond County health inspectors say there is no evidence of bat droppings inside the hospital, and there should be no lingering risks to patients or employees.
