Mothers United holds kickoff event

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of Wilmington mothers is not happy about the pollution levels in New Hanover County. Mothers United, a group branching off of Stop Titan, held its first event today to promote a healthy environment for area children to grow up in.

“We have the second most toxic county in the state and it’s very upsetting,” said Tracy Kellogg-Brodeur, an organizer of Mothers United. “It’s going to effect our children’s health in the short term and especially in the long term.”

Mothers United started in December after they met at a Stop Titan meeting. Their kickoff event was called “Rally Round the Children”.

Due to the weather the event was moved indoors but that did not stop kids from having a good time and parents from learning how they can make a difference.

“We want to give them opportunities to get together, make action, write letters, make noise, and make appointments with commissioners,” said organizer Jamie Walker. “We want them to get active.”

As Mothers United works towards ensuring a healthy environment they also want the youth to know that they can help.

“They can do something. If there is an issue that’s important to them and they stand up for it, that’s going to make a difference,” said Kellogg-Brodeur. “They can be proud of their parents for standing up and they can be proud of themselves for doing something to make the world a better place.”

The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA lists New Hanover County as the number one toxic emitting county and the second most polluted county in the state.

Mothers United says not only are they concerned, but they want it to end.

“I’d rather work on cleaning this up and having a safe place for our kids than moving because I love it here and we have roots here,” said Julie Travis, a Mothers United member.

Mothers United also hosts “Moms’ Night Out” every month so mothers can get together and strategize how the group can protect children’s health in the county.
