Folks take the plunge for Special Olympics

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of people plunged into the chilly waters of Carolina Beach Saturday to raise money for Special Olympics of New Hanover County.

The eighth annual Polar Plunge drew a bigger-than-ever crowd. Folks dressed in costumes and bathing suits, but the only thing off limits was a wetsuit. The water temperature was a cool 53 degrees, but that’s about ten degrees warmer than it was last year. Those who took the plunge say the cold is worth the cause.

“Oh, it’s fantastic! It’s exhilarating,” exclaimed Polar Plunger Joanne Kevitz. “I thought it was going to be a lot colder, but when you got in and got psyched, it was just fantastic.”

This year was Kevitz’s first time taking the plunge. She said she will certainly be back next year, and in costume.

STORMTRACK 3: Big storm system brings lots of rain, wind

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WWAY) — A major storm system will provide much-needed rainfall this weekend, with around two inches possible in southeastern NC. Showers will develop late Saturday evening and continue throughout Saturday night and all day Sunday.

An isolated severe thunderstorm is possible in southeastern NC very late tonight or early Sunday, but the best coverage of severe weather will remain south of our area. Expect gusty winds out of the northeast 15-25 mph. A Small Craft Advisory is also in place.

Colder air arrives as the rain ends late Sunday night, possibly leading to a few snowflakes, mostly in our northern counties. Relatively warm ground temperatures will hamper any major accumulations locally.

Don’t forget to watch our Video Update, and stay with us online on Facebook and on Twitter for constant updates on this system.
