Police make arrest in February double shooting

Friday, March 16th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have arrested a man in connection to the shooting of two people last month. Police arrested Michael Gerrod Jones last night. He is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and other gun charges.

The charges stem from a February 13 shooting near the 600 block of Emory Street. Officer found a man on the corner of N. 30th and Emory Street who has been shot in the back. While responding to that call, they got word that a second gunshot victim was on the way to the hospital in a friend or relative’s car with a bullet wound to his right side.

One of the victims in the shooting was Montey Andrea Murray. He was arrested recently in Brunswick County after deputies there say he led them on a chase after they tried to question him about a child he reportedly dropped off at a hospital who later died.

New Hanover Co. receives improved fire district ratings

Friday, March 16th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -– New Hanover County has received official notification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of the State Fire Marshal of an improvement in the fire district’s response rating. The Southern New Hanover County Fire District received a 4 rating, while the Northern Fire District received a 4/9E rating. Previously rated in 2005 the new rating demonstrates the Board of County Commissioners and the County’s Fire Rescue Department’s commitment to providing exemplary fire protection to the citizens of New Hanover County.

The North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS) ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state), with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also significantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fire district.

“I’d like to congratulate Chief Hall for his department’s performance and for the hard work of all the department members,” said Commissioner Goodwin. “The citizens in the New Hanover County fire districts should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency.”
