Funeral scheduled for Bragg soldier, daughters

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

FORT BRAGG, NC (AP) — A funeral will be held later this week for a Fort Bragg soldier and his two daughters who died in a house fire.

The funeral will be held Thursday at JFK Memorial Chapel on Fort Bragg for 36-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Edward Cantrell and his daughters, 6-year-old Isabella and 4-year-old Natalia.

Cantrell died March 6 when he rushed back into his burning home in Hope Mills to try to rescue his daughters. The only survivor was 37-year-old Louise Cantrell, the wife and mother.

Authorities say the fire was accidental.

Visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday with the funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday. The three will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Fundraising forms filed for shelter helped by ‘Extreme Makeover’

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — State officials say the woman who operates a homeless shelter for female veterans in Fayetteville has met the deadline to apply for a license needed so she can seek donations.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that a spokesman for North Carolina’s secretary of state says Barbara Marshall filed the paperwork Friday. Spokesman George Jeter says the office has until March 20 to approve or reject her application.

Marshall is the founder and director of a nonprofit organization that operates Jubilee House. The group has received donations but doesn’t have the proper license to do so.

Last year, volunteers helped build a 7,200-square-foot duplex to house homeless female veterans on the television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” First lady Michelle Obama visited the house and appeared on the show.
