Help available for Cherokee County storm victims

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Residents of Cherokee County whose homes were damaged by tornadoes earlier this month can get help in rebuilding their lives.

Gov. Beverly Perdue says the US Small Business Administration is providing financial assistance following her request for a disaster declaration.

An SBA Disaster Loan Outreach Center will open Tuesday in Murphy to help individuals complete their applications, answer questions about the disaster loan program and explain the application process. The center is located at the Employment Security Commission and will remain open through March 22.

Severe storms and tornadoes rolled across several western counties March 3, damaging more than 150 homes in Cherokee, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties. Assessments in the latter two counties didn’t meet the threshold for a disaster declaration.

John Edwards’ attorneys could have conflict of interest after representing mistress

Monday, March 12th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A federal court hearing this week will look
into whether the latest attorneys to join John Edwards’ criminal
defense team have a conflict of interest after representing the
former presidential candidate’s mistress.

The hearing scheduled for Thursday in Greensboro will air
whether the two lawyers who had represented Rielle Hunter in a
lawsuit over ownership of a sex tape would have divided loyalties
when representing Edwards.

Edwards faces six criminal counts related to campaign finance
violations over nearly $1 million from two wealthy donors used to
hide the pregnant Hunter as he sought the White House in 2008. He
has pleaded not guilty.

Federal prosecutors say it’s very possible Hunter will be among
the witnesses called to testify at Edwards’ trial. Jury selection
is to begin April 12.
