City says 3rd Street will be ready for Azalea Festival

Monday, March 12th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington says work is on track to have 3rd Street ready through Grace Street in time for the Azalea Festival. The city says all traffic control will be removed, and the full road will be open for the Azalea Festival parade on April 14.

The overall project timeline has been extended to account for obstacles encountered in the southern blocks of the project, including underground storage tanks and an underground vault at the intersection of Market and 3rd Street, as well as the construction of an underground vault for Progress Energy at the corner of Princess and 3rd streets. The expected completion date has been extended from the end of August to Oct. 29. The final two months of work will include street paving and landscaping and crosswalk installation.

The city says the project is still within budget.

The $9.4 million joint project between the city and the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority includes the replacement of aging water and sewer lines, the placement of power lines underground and new pavement, sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals and landscaping on North 3rd street from Davis Street south to Market Street.

WHQR 91.3 announces the Spring Pledge Drive March 21-27

Monday, March 12th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) –- WHQR Public Radio’s spring fund drive will begin March 21 with a focus on community and sweepstakes drawings for an iPad and vacation getaways. This 7-day campaign is one of the on-air fundraising efforts that make up the largest single part of WHQR’s funding.

The goal of this pledge drive is to raise $180,000 to continue providing the thoughtful and award-winning news coverage and music and emergency broadcasting that is only found on WHQR. As a non-profit independent radio station, WHQR counts on the support of its members to provide the high quality radio listeners have come to expect.

“Last spring, with the help of our dedicated supporters, we took four days off our fundraiser. We know we can do it again and raise our goal of $180,000 in just seven days. We want to give our listeners the most uninterrupted programming we can,” says Cleve Callison, WHQR Station Manager.

This Spring 2012 Pledge Drive will celebrate public radio and the community that WHQR serves by featuring community voices on the air during the pledge drive. Listeners will also have opportunities to win an iPad, a fantastic Long Weekend Package on Bald Head Island or a Deluxe Getaway at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary.

WHQR’s Spring Pledge Drive would not be possible without the help of more than 100 volunteers who answer our phones during each pledge drive. This community support, along with financial donations, is vital to the station’s survival. WHQR also thanks the many area restaurants who donate food to feed the volunteers.

WHQR 91.3fm, broadcasting from Wilmington, is the only public radio station serving southeastern North Carolina.
