14 WPD officers promoted

Friday, March 9th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a big day for several members of the Wilmington Police Department. The department promoted 14 officers during a ceremony this afternoon.

The men and women working their way up through the ranks say it took hard work and dedication to the community. Officers agree the effort is worth it when you’re able to celebrate with your friends and family.

“As all police officers know the police community is a very tight-knit community,” Cpl. Kevin Smith said. “It’s more like family. So the opportunity to be here with your extended family is a great event.”

Chief Ralph Evangelous says he is proud of his department and how far they have come.

Leland Fire Department’s $1M grant to benefit whole county

Friday, March 9th, 2012

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A $1 million federal grant for the Leland Fire Department will benefit the whole county.

Leland got the Assistance to Firefighters grant on behalf of the Brunswick County Fire Chief’s Association. The award and a $360,000 match from Brunswick County will allow 22 of 23 fire departments in the county to move day-to-day communications to the the same system most other emergency services in the county use.

Only the fire department at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point will not be on the system, because it is a federal agency and cannot get money from the grant.

The Leland Fire Department will act as “host applicant” for this award. All radios purchased through this grant award will be funneled through the department and out to the 22 participating fire departments.
