FactCheck.org says AFP inflating claims in latest budget issue spot

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (FACTCHECK.ORG) — Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group based in Raleigh, omits some important details in a TV ad attacking North Carolina’s lame-duck Democratic governor and praising the Republican-controlled state General Assembly during a partisan budget battle.

The ad says the legislature added state funding for “2,000 more teachers” and that its budget “adds teachers.” But the legislature’s increased funding didn’t make up for the loss of federal money and discretionary state funds that local districts use to hire teachers. The state had a net loss of about 900 teachers overall.

The ad says the governor called for a $1-billion tax increase, but that depends on how you look at it. She called for extending a temporary 1 percent sales tax increase that had been in effect for two years — but at a reduced level of 0.75 percent.

A website created by the group to support the ad campaign uses inflated figures to claim the legislature returned $2 billion to state taxpayers by rejecting the governor’s proposed budget. The group arrives at that figure by making faulty assumptions. The actual number is closer to $1.3 billion.

Katie Couric to guest-host ‘Good Morning America’

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) — Katie Couric will be an early riser all next week.

ABC announced today that the former “Today” show anchor will be guest-hosting “Good Morning America,” the rival wake-up show at Couric’s current workplace.

Beginning Monday, Couric will sub for the vacationing Robin Roberts. She will appear for the week alongside Roberts’s regular co-host, George Stephanopoulos.

Couric was co-host of NBC’s “Today” for 15 years before leaving the network in 2006. Before jumping to ABC last year, she was at CBS, where she anchored the “Evening News.”

“Today” has long been the ratings leader, but recently “Good Morning America” has been nipping at its heels.

“Good Morning America” airs on WWAY Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. following “Good Morning Carolina” with Ashley Jacobs and Tim Buckley.
