Hurricane officials: No more tape for windows

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

By MIKE SCHNEIDER
Associated Press

ORLANDO, FL (AP) — Officials with the National Hurricane Center have a message for residents living in hurricane-prone areas: Don’t tape your windows.

Hurricane center officials are joining with a consumer advocate group Tuesday at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando to encourage residents to skip taping their windows when a hurricane is heading their way. They believe it leads to a false sense of security.

They say residents in hurricane zones instead should use hurricane shutters and impact-resistant windows.

Hundreds of meteorologists and emergency management officials are in Orlando for the weeklong hurricane conference.

Foreclosures in Wilmington on the rise

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — A new housing report out today indicates foreclosure rates in the Wilmington area are on the rise. These figures, coming from CoreLogic, show foreclosure rates in January 2012 at nearly three percent.

While that’s up from this same time last year, the Wilmington rate is actually lower than the national foreclosure rate.

That rate sits at almost three and a half percent.

The report also says homeowners are having trouble keeping up with their house payments.

The local mortgage delinquency rate is nearing six percent, more than it was at this time last year.

NASA launches suborbital rockets from Virginia

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

ATLANTIC, VA (AP) — After several delays, NASA has launched five rockets from Virginia that are part of a study of the upper level jet stream.

The rockets began blasting off just before 5 a.m. Tuesday from NASA’s space center on Wallops Island. Bad weather had postponed other planned launches last week.

The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX) will help scientists understand the jet stream, which is located 60 to 65 miles above Earth’s surface.

After launching, the rockets released a chemical tracer to form white clouds that allowed scientists and the public to visualize the winds.

A NASA news release says the launches and clouds were reportedly seen from as far south as Wilmington west to Charleston, WV, and north to Buffalo, NY.
