NC agency hears from public on fracking study

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — The state environmental agency is listening to the public’s response to a natural gas drilling technique that could create jobs but carries pollution risks.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Tuesday is reviewing its study on shale gas exploration using hydraulic fracturing, also called fracking. The Chapel Hill meeting is the second this month. The Sierra Club is planning a rally for opponents of the method.

The agency two weeks ago released the results of its study that found the controversial drilling method can be done safely if regulations are put in place first.

Hundreds crammed into a meeting in Sanford last week to hear the pros and cons of fracking in a part of the state that’s believed to hold a 40-year supply of natural gas.

No fireworks at Belville Commission meeting, just cake

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

BELVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Belville Board of Commissioners met Monday night and things went smoothly. This is the first meeting since Belville Mayor Jack Batson filed charges against Commissioner Joe Breault.

Batson claims Breault has threatened him, charges Breault denies. Neither man would speak to us on camera about the dispute.

Commissioners may not be talking, but a handful of residents addressed the commission on the disagreement.

Roberta Fitzpatrick sums up the sentiment.

“These last few weeks when we’ve read those articles about this little dispute between two of our board members it’s just dragged the town down.”

It wasn’t an unpleasant meeting in fact there was a cake. Belville is celebrating it’s 35-th birthday and everyone could agree on wishing the town well.
