WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One person is dead after falling off of a truck on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
According to Wilmington Police, an unidentified 17-year-old male was riding in the back of the pickup truck while it was traveling westbound on the bridge. Passengers looked back and noticed he wasn’t there. Police say the victim struck the steel grating on the bridge and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The accident happened in the westbound lane, which is still closed. The eastbound lane is now open to traffic.
In the state of North Carolina, it is legal for those 16 and older to ride in the bed of pickup trucks.
