New Hanover Co. launches lockdown alerts via text and Twitter

Monday, March 26th, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Parents worried about their child’s safety at school can now get school lockdown alerts via Twitter or text message.

New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911 Communications is partnering with New Hanover County Schools to post information about school lockdowns at @NHC911Lockdown through an automated process with the County’s computer aided dispatch system.

“This service will enhance our notification ability to people who are near a public school of the lockdown,” New Hanover Co. Emergency Management Director Warren Lee said. “Although most lockdown scenarios are precautionary, we’ve received requests from private schools and daycares asking to be notified.”

To receive school lockdown notifications, Twitter users may follow @NHC911Lockdown, and non-Twitter users may text “follow @NHC911Lockdown” to 40404. Subscribers will receive a “cancel” notification when officials have lifted the lockdown. Standard text messaging and/or data rates may apply.

The new Twitter account joins @NHC911, which provides real time updates on traffic related incidents.

Report: Balloon pilot tried to climb over storm

Monday, March 26th, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) — Federal investigators say a hot-air balloon pilot who died after taking skydivers up for a jump in Georgia was trying to evade a sudden thunderstorm by climbing over it.

The skydivers floated safely to the ground, but Edward Ristaino’s balloon plummeted to earth after climbing to an estimated 17,000 feet.

A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board on Friday says pilot Edward Ristaino told the skydivers to jump, then radioed his ground crew that he would “attempt to get over the storm.”

But shortly after that, as his balloon climbed in the updraft of the storm, he said he didn’t think he could get over it.

The report did not specify a cause for the balloon’s failure.

Ristaino’s body was found three days after the March 16 accident.

NC gay marriage ban debate today

Monday, March 26th, 2012

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A small college in Raleigh is the site of a panel discussion on possible results if North Carolina voters approve or reject changing the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The event at Meredith College on Monday brings together some of the proposed amendment’s most ardent supporters and opponents in what is billed as a respectful discussion. The panelists include law professors and church pastors on both sides. It’s being moderated by a Meredith College professor of religion and ethics.

North Carolina law already rules out gay marriage, but voters will decide in the May 8 election whether that ban will be locked into the state constitution. That would mean marriage laws could not be changed quickly by legislators.
