NC health grant program suspended following audit

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s health department has
suspended a program designed to improve the health of minority
residents and others after an internal review found fiscal and
management irregularities.

The Division of Public Health said Friday it suspects misuse of
state funds involving the Community Focused Eliminating Health
Disparities Initiative. The internal audit’s findings were provided
to the State Bureau of Investigation.

The state-funded initiative was responsible for $2.8 million in
grant money to 34 organizations during the past fiscal year.
The division says personnel changes have occurred within the
state office that administers the grants, but didn’t say where the
changes occurred. The next round of grants are now expected this
summer.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services
didn’t immediately return messages seeking more information.

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The third annual pajama party hosted by the Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness. To remind people that not everyone has pajamas or a home to enjoy every night.

The event featured local celebrities like Commissioner Jason Thompson in his pajamas.

Our own report/anchor Marissa Jasek was there for WWAY.

Along with a host of folks strutting their sleepwear for a good cause.

Dan Ferrell is a tells us tonight’s event is for a good cause.
“The money from tonight’s fund raiser will go to a new homeless medical care that will take people who are homeless and have medical emergencies and are too sick to be in the woods or in a shelter but not sick enough to be in a hospital”.

The event was well attended in fact it was a sell-out at the Blue Water on the intra-coastal.

If you missed this year’s event but still want to help out just go to the United Way web site
