NC school system calls Black History Month letter ‘poorly worded’

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

SHELBY, NC (AP) — Union County Schools officials acknowledge that a letter asking elementary school students to dress in “African American attire” to celebrate Black History Month was poorly worded, but had good intentions.

The Charlotte Observer reports the letter was sent home with Western Union Elementary School students in advance of the school’s Feb. 28 celebration. The letter said if students did not have “African American attire,” they were encouraged to wear animal-print clothing or shirts with zebras or giraffes on them.

Spokeswoman Luan Ingram said the school system is reminding its principals to be very sensitive when communicating with parents concerning different ethnic groups and cultures.

The school system said the “African American attire” in the letter refers to traditional African clothing like the students studied during the month.

UNCW students recycle trash into palm trees

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some UNC Wilmington students put the idea of turning trash into treasure into practice today.

Students worked together to build palm trees out of recyclable materials found around campus. The campus dining collected boxes, can lids and two-liter soda bottles to construct the trees.

Students heading to lunch were encouraged to help with the project and learn about sustainability in the process.

“They’re here to do the event to help promote awareness for Recyclemania, which takes place now until the end of the month, and what Recyclemania is, it’s an international competition between about 500 schools to basically see how much we can recycle during this time,” UNCW Residence Coordinator Justin Wojicki said.

Progress is ranked in different categories, including paper, cardboard and waste minimization. UNCW finished second in the CAA last year.

Students get on bus to learn in lab

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover High School biology students found a new way of learning and experimenting today.

The DESTINY Science Bus Discovery from UNC Chapel Hill transformed into a classroom for Michelle Huffman’s biology class for the day. DESTINY stands for Delivering Edge-cutting Science Technology and Internet across North Carolina for Years to come.

Students who normally would not be able to use high-tech equipment in a laboratory got that opportunity by getting on the bus.

“It all started it was to pull in low-wealth, minority kids into the lab and give them exposure to it. And now it’s evolved into just getting kids involved in it in general, and it’s a really great thing for us, because we can give them something that they would get in college, when we can give it to them now,” Huffman said.

The students conducted research to teach them about sickle cells.
